Getting to know Aseye

Meet Aseye Mensah
What's your name?
I'm Aseye.
How old are you?
I'm almost fifteen.
Tell us a little something about yourself?
Umm... I don't know how to start. Let's see; I'm christian or at least I try to be. I love fufu and groundnut soup. I can't live without music. I like doing things my way. I like boys especially the cute ones. I'm outgoing and friendly. People say I have a nice smile. Boys say I'm beautiful, but you can really believe a boy. I'm a good cook, or so I've been told. I can sing and dance, but I'm not to good. I'm a bit of a tomboy. I'm quite good at sports. I like to think, I'm street smart because my school grades don't really say I'm book smart. I could go on forever.
We wouldn't mind. There are undoubtedly many girls like you in Ghana, what sets you apart and makes you different?
Honestly, I'm not sure. Personally, I don't know why anyone would take an interest in my life. But my life has always being a roller-coaster ride. I used to act before I'd think. I used to do so many crazy things that would always land me in trouble. So much so that a day with trouble for Afua Mensah is like a day without oxygen. Then, I had to stay with my Grandfather. The experience I had in my parent's hometown changed everything. Well, almost everything, that's why I'm smiling.
We'd be interviewing your family and friends next, do you know what they'd say?
I have no idea. But I'm sure I'd get some bad remarks.
Before you go, we'd like to ask; what makes your story special?
It will inspire you.
Meet the Family
Meet Papa
You are Aseye's Grandfather?
Yes, that is correct.
What can you tell us about Afua?
She's a wonderful child. She's more talented than she thinks perhaps she a little misguided too.
Have you had any effect on her?
Perhaps. Aseye is the kind of person who likes to take decisions on their own. She likes to be listened to. And she also wants her space. If you give her all that and she'll open up to you. I just helped her to know that you can see things differently, far far differently than you've ever seen them before.
Do you think she loves her Grandfather?
I know she does.
Meet the Parents
Mrs. Mensah is Aseye your daughter?
Not if she's done something wrong. Are you from the police, FBI or CIA? Is she in some kind of trouble?
No, Mrs. Mensah, we're just conducting an interview. Why would you suspect Aseye being in some kind of trouble?
She's very.. erm... spirited.
What other traits does she have?
She's independent. She's driven. But she's also stubborn and hard-headed. Aseye can work hard when she wants to but she's lazy most of the time. She's a procrastinator. She's smart. She's a good cook, she learnt from the best. She's a tomboy. She prefers to listen to that plastic and metal device play sounds than to listen to me. She can be disobedient but she can also make you proud. You never know when she'll surprise you.
You mentioned 'surprise,' have there been many surprises when raising Aseye?
More than you can imagine.
Mr. Mensah is Aseye your daughter?
Not until you tell me what she's done.
She hasn't done anything, this is an interview, what is your daughter's best trait?
She is driven. When she's determined to something, she goes all out to do it. It's quite surprising because she can be so lazy at times.
What is her worst trait?
It's the same as the best one. She is driven. Even when its something we tell her not to do, once her mind is made up she going to do it! It's only a matter of time. Aseye is strange, she never plans anything unless it's something mischievous.
Meet the Brother
Kweku, Aseye tells us you have a large appetite, is this true?
Well, it's not my fault my mom and sister prepare the best food.
She also says you have a larger than live attitude to match you attitude, care to explain?
Haha... I'll get her for this. That's a bit true. I don't let things weigh me down. Not even extra calories. I work hard and make sure that most people are happy.
Is Aseye, one of these people?
No, I try to make her life miserable.
She put that in a statement.
She did? She is so going to get it. We've been pranking and messing with each other for as long as I remember. I actually think it started when she was born.
Meet the Sister
Maame, Aseye says you pretend to be an angel but you're not, is it true?
She's just jealous she is no longer the last born.
Why do you think Aseye gets into trouble?
I think it's because she likes it.
Meet Cousin Jesse
Jesse, what do you like most about you cousin?
She's just like me.
And that would be what exactly?
C.D.R - Cunning, devious and rebellious.
Have you had an influence on Aseye?
Yo, negative times negative is still negative. No, wait, negative times negative is positive. Positive for negative action. Yeah! I don't think I've had an influence on her. If I did or didn't, I'm still sure Aseye will still be as she is. I thought her a thing or two those. Like how to undo a lock and how to hot-wire a car.
Meet Her Best Friend
So you are Aseye's bestfriend right?
Yes.
What's your name?
Jessica Juno.
Are you Ghanian?
I'm half Ghanian, half Mexican.
Interesting mix.
I know.
So has Aseye ever gotten you into trouble?
Has she ever.
Meaning?
Meaning, Aseye is Aseye. There's nothing to it. She's who she's always been even when she changes. She's gotten me into trouble ever since we'd been friends. I believe the first time I met her she was in trouble.
She was in trouble, why?
Well, I was new in the neighborhood. I didn't know anyone. Then one day this girl, that's Aseye, was riding towards me like crazy. I was going to buy something I guess. She said to me; "Hide me."
She grabbed me and repeated; "Hide me." So I took her inside and locked the gate. Just then my heart skipped a beat when this big black blood-seeking dog barked behind the gate. I run with Aseye to behind the porch. After a while the noise died down but we still waited. We both walked towards the gate and I unlocked it. I opened the gate. The dog had turned her bicycle tires into a chew toy. I said to her; "You need a new bike." She laughed. "What's your name?" she asked. "Jessica," I answered. "What's yours?" I wanted to know. "I'm Aseye" I smiled and she did too. It was the start of a beautiful friendship. I asked why she was being chased. She explained that she was laughing at an old man. But stopped laughing then started running when she found out he had a huge dog. That's so Aseye.
In one word describe Aseye?
Crazy!
